“I’m Ready to Talk, Kansas City” gives readers a chance to meet 25 veterans who share their stories. The veterans include a Marine WWII pilot, a sailor who was captured on the USS Pueblo, and many veterans who served in the Vietnam war. These men tell personal stories that have been kept close to their vests for years.
WWII
I was fortunate to get permission from John Snyder, son of Marine Pilot MSGT Grover Snyder to include his dad’s unbelievable story.
December 7, 1941, at 0815 hours Grover and several others were in an area in back of the mess hall when a Japanese fighter pilot opened up with his machine guns. Clyde escaped the fate of many of his fellow soldiers.
Battle of Midway June 3-6, 1942: Grover flew his dive bomber in the battle that began to turn the tide of war for the allies.
Survival::On a later mission a Japanese Zero took him and his plane out of the air battle. Grover was wounded, had a dead engine, and was miles out over the Pacific. Grover lived. In the book Grover tells his unbelievable story of survival. I am honored to have his story in my book.
USS Pueblo
On January 23, 1968, the Pueblo with a crew of 83 sailors was captured by North Korea. The crew was held in a POW prison for eleven months. Steve Woelk was a sailor on the Pueblo. He was wounded in the attack at sea.
He was separated from his crew for over a month while recuperating from surgery. His only contacts were his N Korean doctor and nurses and they did not speak English.
After the hospital he was returned to the prison. His story of the capture, agonizing medical procedures, confinement, and release will give the reader a heightened appreciation for this historical event.
Afghanistan
The veterans from this war are just beginning to tell their stories.
Vietnam
I am so very appreciative of all the Vietnam Veterans who opened up and submitted their stories for the book. They broadened my knowledge of a war that lasted several years.
Taps
Two of the soldiers who submitted their stories for this book have received their final salute. I wish to dedicate this book to Sgt Ron Martin and Specialist Joe De Frank.
